Cherry Valley Festival 2012On Saturday, June 16, the second annual Cherry Valley Festival will be held to celebrate the unique natural environmental qualities of the valley and raise awareness of conservation efforts underway. This community outreach event is organized by the Friends of Cherry Valley (FOCV), a non-profit organization committed to preserving, protecting and enhancing the natural resources and scenic beauty of Cherry Valley.
The Cherry Valley Festival will run from 10 AM to 5 PM, rain or shine, and will be held at The Josie Porter Farm, home of Cherry Valley Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) on Cherry Valley Road, south of Stroudsburg, PA. The festival is free to the public.
Planned events include educational speakers, demonstrations, live music, family activities, environmentally themed vendors, arts and crafts. In addition, there will be tasty food and beverages available, a variety of raffle items, and a silent auction. Proceeds will support FOCV. The festival centerpiece is the speaker series. This year’s topics include: raw food preparation, local reptiles, amphibians, birds, aquatic resources and the results of the BioBlitz. There will also be nature walks and Josie Porter farm tours. Live entertainment will include acoustical music throughout the day provided by the Pocono Bluegrass & Folk Society.
This year, the festival will be held in conjunction with a “BioBlitz” organized by the Monroe County Conservation District at the Josie Porter Farm. A BioBlitz is an intense period of biological surveying in an attempt to record all the living species within a designated area. Groups of scientists, naturalists and volunteers conduct an intensive field study in a short 24 hour time period. The goal of the BioBlitz is to raise public interest in biodiversity. The Blitz will start at 3:00 pm on Friday, June 15 and conclude at 3:00 pm on Saturday, June 16 the day of the festival. Community involvement is encouraged during the BioBlitz.
This year the Cherry Valley Festival and BioBlitz coincide with the Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation Center’s annual open house also in Cherry Valley. Come spend the day in our unique and beautiful valley!
